WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED?!

• Here the students are presented with a very unusual situation and they have to speculate what has happened.

For example:

“You enter the classroom on Monday morning. On the only desk in the middle of the classroom, you can see a book of philosophy, a photo of the queen and a pair of red high-heels. What the heck happened?”

Or:

“You are in the dentist’s waiting room, trying to ignore the sound of drilling coming through the door. Suddenly, the drilling stops and the patient appears in the doorway. He’s got a wild look about him, wide-open eyes, and a blood-splatted laptop in his hand. What the heck happened?”

• This activity provides a lot of laughter in the classroom, which is always a nice thing
• it develops creativity and wit – as the students have to come up with explanations of really weird situations
• it serves as a revision of past and present modal verbs of speculation (so it’s something for grammar freaks as well)
